What is a keto diet?

A ketogenic or “keto” diet is a low-carbohydrate, rich in fat eating plan that has ties back to the 19th century. Commonly used to control diabetes, it has also been used in closely monitored test conditions for a range of other diseases.
During the 1970s, keto began to gain popularity along with other potential weight-loss diets. The most well known of these eating plans is the Atkins Diet.
The growth of the Atkins Diet and the publicity it was able to gain worldwide popularized low-carb diets. As well as the keto diet, other low-carb diets still in vogue today include Paleo and South Beach.

Why is keto so popular?

Quite simply, the keto diet’s popularity is primarily due to its reliance on ketones rather than glucose as the primary source of energy in the body.
By avoiding high carbohydrate foods, the keto diet forces ketones produced by the body from stored fat to be used as fuel. If continued for several days, and while fasting, the body begins to use fat as its main source of energy.
As a result, a keto diet is regarded as an effective way to burn fat, particularly when combined with an active training regime.
