In-N-Out Keto

There’s something quite nostalgic about a trip to In-N-Out; who remembers those hot summer days getting a burger with your friends or the family day trip pit stops?

The family-owned, world famous burger joint has been around going on 70 years now. Originating out of California, the first In-N-Out was opened in 1948 by Harry Snyder.

Harry used to get up every morning to scour the markets for fresh ingredients to create truly delicious burgers; a work ethic and process that has continued to this day as In-N-Out continue to set the standard for damn fine burgers.

We obviously love an In-N-Out Burger. Not just for the nostalgia factor but those unforgettable flavours that accompany it and which Mr Snyder fought so hard to achieve.

Whilst it may seem contradictory to link a ketogenic diet with a fast food joint, it may actually surprise you to know that you can make just about any eatery work for you; you just have to be smart, and you have to be prepared.

We’re going to show you exactly how you can relive those memories and taste sensations whilst sustaining your ketosis (and social life!).

Is In-N-Out Burger Keto-friendly?

You best believe it is!

Virtually any burger is going to be keto-friendly when you remove the bun and sauce. Eating smarter and planning in advance is the real trick to keto (not being a social hermit afraid of eating outside the house).

Using the nutritional info provided on their site has been incredibly helpful for us!

In-N-Out also offers a range of other keto-suitable options, add-ons and drinks.

We’re going to give you our best tips for ordering at In-N-Out, our favorite go to options and how to navigate around the potential carbohydrate saboteurs that are lurking on their menu.

What are the Tips for Ordering at In-N-Out on a Keto Diet?

The trick is to first focus on how you can customize your burger to be keto friendly. Thankfully, In-N-Out actually offer these options straight from their menu which saves a whole lot of hassle!

That doesn’t mean you can’t customize it in a roundabout way; we’ll let you in on the secret In-N-Out menu that very few know about!

Of course, you’ll want to minimize your exposure to their milkshakes and fries.

These are going to be packed full of readily available carbohydrates that’ll knock you straight out of ketosis (important to note however that these are made from scratch every day and from the freshest ingredients, carrying on Mr. Snyder’s legacy)!

We’d also advise asking for the zero calorie, sugar free alternatives for the more popular carbonated drinks; In-N-Out stock a whole range of them and, quite frankly, we believe you can’t even taste the difference!

In-N-Out Protein Style

Thankfully the menu at In-N-Out is fairly straightforward (you have three options basically) with a bun-less alternative listed; this is their “In-N-Out Protein Style” option.

The great thing about In-N-Out burgers is that their 100% American sourced beef of the highest quality without any nasty additives, preservatives or carb-rich fillers. Harry Snyder had a vision of what a great burger should be and that stands true to this day.

The In-N-Out Protein style burger options are in around 8g of net carbs. You can decrease this further if you miss out on the lettuce, tomatoes, onions and or trademark spread.

Where’s the fun in that though? 8g of net carbs is completely fine for keeping you in ketosis so we’d argue you’re better off just enjoying the burger rather than taking away from it anymore!

In-N-Out Animal Style

Who in the audience knew that In-N-Out had a secret menu? We didn’t for a very long time but, when we discovered it, it was one of the best keto days ever!

The In-N-Out Animal Style menu was supposedly created by the Baldwin Park branch in California during the 1960s.

The name, as far as the legends go, came from the rowdy surfer and skater kids who used to hang out at the location and were known as “the animals” because of their raucous behavior.

The “animals” started ordering mustard grilled burgers with grilled onion, spread, and pickles and a whole new burger was born – the Animal Style Burger!

According to the In-N-Out website the beef patty is grilled with mustard, topped with extra spread, pickles, and grilled, caramelized onions.

Those following a vegetarian keto approach can also order animal style grilled cheese, which comes with all of the above, minus the beef patty.

Whilst this burger will offer more net carbs than those which appear on the regular menu, you simply have to request it without a bun and even ask for the spread on the side (to use at your leisure) or without spread entirely to make it keto-friendly!

What Should I Order at In-N-Out on Keto?

With the menu being so simplistic it makes our jobs a lot easier to recommend which option to go for. As mentioned, each option is going to run you around 8g of net carbs per serving.

Hamburger

What can we say, it’s your rudimentary, run of the mill hamburger… but damn is it a tasty one!

The quality really shines through when you take that first bite.

It actually makes for more of a snack than a complete meal. However, if you want to add a bit more to it, simply ask the staff to add some extra lettuce, tomatoes and onions as a side salad!

  • Kcals: 240
  • Protein (g): 13g
  • Fats (g): 17g

Cheeseburger

The taste of our childhood right here, we love an In-N-Out cheeseburger! Insanely tasty, with and without the spread!

We’ve harked on about the quality enough.

Instead, we’d recommend asking them for a cheeky extra slice of cheese to make this burger even more amazing (the staff at In-N-Out have always gone the extra mile for us so we’d recommend asking) and the extra side salad we mentioned to create a hearty, delicious meal!

  • Kcals: 330
  • Protein (g): 18g
  • Fats (g): 25g

Double-Double

The signature Double-Double is a mouth-watering feast of deliciousness, keto or no keto!

It comes with two American cheese slices, two beef patties, fresh or grilled onions, lettuce, the trademark spread, and tomatoes. By this stage we’re assuming you know to go with the protein style option (bun-less); it’s indescribably tasty either way. Trust us, we’ve tried both!

  • Protein (g): 33g
  • Fats (g): 39g

Conclusion

Whilst many will seclude themselves away from social events at fast food places and other eateries when following a ketogenic diet, we’ve shown that there is really no reason to do so, especially not when it comes to In-N-Out.

Not only is the food of the highest possible quality but also delivers in flavor, provides nostalgia and, most importantly for our keto community, can be made to be ketosis friendly! They even have their own keto-friendly menu options!
