2011 marked the start of two partnerships – Reebok and ESPN.

CrossFit entered a 10-year partnership deal with Reebok. This made prizes go up in value – up to $1 million. The individual male and female winners took home $250,000 each. The rest went to the winners in other divisions.

ESPN partnered with CrossFit to cover the sport of the Fittest on EarthTM on national television.

2011 was also the year the Open competitions started. From March 15 to May 1, athletes competed in six workouts and logged their scores in real time and online. And the Masters Division was broken down into four age groups. More than 26,000 athletes competed.

Only the fittest 60 individual athletes and 30 teams moved up to the Regionals. And for the first time, the athletes that made it to the Regionals competed in the same events. The Games took place in Home Depot Center at Carson, California.

2013: Reebok CrossFit Games – Carson, California

In 2013, more than 138,000 athletes registered for the Open. The top 48 male, 48 females, and 30 teams moved up to the Regionals.

On a sad note, the winner of the 2012 Reebok CrossFit Games, Annie Thorisdottir had to pull out of the Open Workout 13.3 due to a back injury. She was in 12th place worldwide.

The competition began with a version of Jackie. Both men and women were to use the same weight barbell – 45 pounds. There were live broadcasts of six regionals which included Central East, Mid Atlantic, Northern California, North Central, Southern California and South West. The final event of Europe Regional was broadcast live on Eurosport.

Two new equipment were introduced in 2013. One was what’s called a Pig (a weighted metal frame) for flipping. And the other was the Worm (six short-length logs linked together by rope).

2015: Reebok CrossFit Games – Carson, California

Some major changes were made this year. Cuts to the number of qualifiers that moved on to the Regionals were made.

Only eight individual athletes, instead of 17, would move on to the Regionals. 10 regional qualifiers would come from Latin America, Asia, and Africa; 20 from the U.S. and Canada; and 30 from Europe and Australia. To make it to the Regionals and then the Games, athletes needed to prove their fitness more than ever.

There was also an addition of a Teenage Division for athletes 14-17 years old and scaled options at the Open Level. This made the RX’d workouts tougher. Handstand push-ups were introduced and muscle-ups were moved to the beginning of a workout instead of at the end.

Other new things in 2015 were the handstand push-ups, and starting the workouts with muscle-ups.
